VELVET DRAWING CRASH COURSE
Velvet drawing has never been easier! In this step-by-step fashion sketching tutorial, we are going to learn how to render different velvet textures. I will show you several awesome techniques that I use to draw this fantastic fabric. We are going to draw a lot of velvet: silk velvet, crushed velvet, cotton velvet, etc.
Velvet is a type of closely woven tufted fabric of silk, nylon or cotton, in which the cut threads are evenly distributed, with a short pile on one side, giving it a distinctive feel. By extension, the word velvety means “smooth like velvet.”

STEP 1 – WARM UP
Let’s take a look at two techniques that you can use to draw the houndstooth pattern (see the image below instructions).
This exercise will train your hands to draw the draping of a velvet fabric. You can draw more “branches” and make it even more challenging.
STEP 2 – SKETCH PREPARATION
In Step 3 we will follow 6 video-tutorials, where I am giving step-by-step instructions on how to draw different types of velvet used in 6 designs: Valentino, Ralph Lauren, Luisa Beccaria, Elie Saab and Haider Ackermann.
In all 6 sketches, I am using the same body pose with different hand positions. You can download the fashion pose template by clicking the image below.
