DRAWING SNAKE PATTERN/TEXTURE

After completing this lesson, you will know how to draw beautiful snake patterns/textures and how to use them in your sketches. The technique is quite simple, yet it gives fantastic results! So let’s do it?

INTRO

Different snake species are frequently identified by their special color patterns. Those patterns are systemised into stripes, diamonds, blotches, and spots. In this tutorial, we are going to learn how to draw blotches and diamonds which are the most frequently used snake patterns in the fashion world.

Blotches are big squarish or irregularly shaped markings, often with dark borders.

Diamonds are linked diamond-shaped blotches running down the center of the back. They usually have dark borders.

STEP 1 – WARM UP

In this step, we are training to draw different variations of both snake patterns – diamonds and blotches. Complete the following exercises below before jumping into the final video-lesson.drawing-snake-pattern-exercise

1. Try drawing a continuous condensed zigzagish line with a 0.5 fineliner. We need it to render a snake pattern.

2. Using that line draw shapes resembling X. Make some of them with a hole in the center.

2′. Now try to make different X-s. You can alter the shapes by adding extra elements, thickening some parts, or by breaking the lines.

2. On the sides of some diamonds draw either horns or open/closed circles (irregularly shaped).

3. Add extra elements to each diamond.

4. Draw the X-s from the previous exercise on the sides of each diamond.

STEP 2 – SKETCH PREPARATION

In Step 3 we will follow a video-tutorial, where I am giving step-by-step instructions on how to use a snake pattern in a fashion sketch. I’ve prepared 2 croquis for the tutorial in advance. You can download them by clicking on the image below.
