I’ve been thinking about why silk is so difficult to draw. Most fabrics reveal their form first and their light second — a fold announces itself, and the shading follows. Silk does the opposite. It shows you light before it shows you shape, and if you don’t understand that order, nothing you draw on top of it will feel true. I no longer begin with the outline. I begin with the brightest point on the fabric and work outward from there, letting the mid-tones tell me where the form is rather than the other way around. It’s a small reversal, but it changes the entire drawing.
